40 Billion CFU Probiotic: What the Number on the Label Means

Probiotic labels often feature a large CFU number on the front. CFU stands for colony-forming units, but that number is only one part of the label. To compare formulas, also look at serving size, the strains listed and any additional ingredients.

Check the serving size behind the CFU number

A CFU amount should be read together with the serving size. If a product lists 40 billion CFU per serving, check how many capsules make that serving and how many servings are in the bottle.

Look for the specific strains

Do not stop at the words “probiotic blend.” Read the Supplement Facts panel for the organisms identified on the label.

Check for other formula components

Some probiotic products also include prebiotic ingredients or delivery technologies. These should be listed clearly so you can compare one formula with another.

An example: BioAlign 40B™

BioAlign 40B™ Probiotic 40 Billion CFU lists four probiotic strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14), Bifidobacterium lactis (Bl-04), Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp-115) and Lactobacillus paracasei (Lpc-37). Its proprietary blend provides 40 billion CFU per serving and also lists marine polysaccharide complex and fructooligosaccharide. The bottle contains 60 capsules and 30 servings.

Compare labels, not just front-panel numbers

Use the full label to compare CFU amount, serving size, listed strains, other ingredients and suggested use. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking medication or managing a medical condition.
