How to Read a Multivitamin + Botanical Supplement Label

Multivitamin and botanical supplements can contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, plant ingredients and other compounds in the same formula. Comparing them starts with the Supplement Facts panel rather than broad front-label promises.

Start with serving size

Check how many capsules make one serving and how many servings are in the container. This makes it easier to compare ingredient amounts between products.

Separate listed nutrients from proprietary blends

Some formulas list vitamins and minerals individually while grouping other ingredients into a proprietary blend. A proprietary blend tells you the total amount of the blend, while individual ingredient amounts inside that blend may not be disclosed.

Read the complete ingredient list

Look for botanicals, amino acids, phospholipids and allergens that matter to you. Also check whether the formula contains caffeine if that is part of your decision.

An example: EvoClarity™

EvoClarity™ Multivitamin & Botanical Formula provides 60 capsules and 30 servings. Its label combines a vitamin and mineral panel with a 692 mg proprietary blend containing ingredients such as DMAE bitartrate, choline, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, bacopa, phosphatidylserine, GABA, DHA and botanical extracts. The formula is caffeine-free and contains soy and fish.

Use the label as your source of truth

Compare serving size, listed amounts, allergens, directions and warnings before choosing a dietary supplement. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking medication or managing a medical condition.
