Melatonin Supplement Labels: Serving Size, Amounts and Directions

Melatonin supplements can differ substantially in amount per serving, serving size and the other ingredients included in the formula. Reading those details is more useful than comparing products by name alone.

Find the melatonin amount per serving

Start with the Supplement Facts panel and identify the amount of melatonin in one complete serving. Then check how many capsules or tablets make that serving.

Review the rest of the formula

Some nighttime formulas contain melatonin alone, while others combine it with vitamins, minerals, amino acids or botanical ingredients. Read the full panel so you know what is included.

Directions and cautions matter

Follow the suggested use printed on the product label. Nighttime products can also carry cautions related to driving, operating machinery, medications or other circumstances.

An example: EvoSleep™

EvoSleep™ Melatonin Nighttime Formula lists 10 mg melatonin per serving, a 905 mg nighttime formula blend, 1.8 mg vitamin B6 and 13 mg magnesium. The serving is two capsules, with 60 capsules and 30 servings per bottle. Its label directs users to take two capsules with water 30–60 minutes before bedtime.

Make comparisons from the full panel

Compare the amount per serving, serving size, additional ingredients, directions and cautions. Consult a healthcare professional before use if pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking medication—especially antidepressants or sedatives—or managing a medical condition.
