GlyciNight Magnesium Glycinate 250 mg, 60 capsules by ThEvo LABS

Magnesium Glycinate: Why the Label Says “250 mg from 1,786 mg”

Pick up two magnesium supplements and you may see very different numbers: one says 250 mg, another says 1,786 mg. They can describe the same amount of magnesium. The difference is whether the label is showing the magnesium itself or the whole compound it is bound to.

Elemental magnesium vs. the compound

Magnesium in supplements is always attached to another molecule. In magnesium glycinate, it is bound to the amino acid glycine. That makes the compound much heavier than the magnesium it carries.

  • Compound weight (for example, 1,786 mg magnesium glycinate) is the total weight of magnesium plus glycine.
  • Elemental magnesium (for example, 250 mg magnesium) is the part that counts toward your magnesium intake and the % Daily Value.

In the Supplement Facts panel, the amount next to “Magnesium” and its % Daily Value refers to elemental magnesium. The compound name usually appears in parentheses, as in “Magnesium (as magnesium glycinate)”.

Do the math once

Divide the elemental amount by the compound amount: 250 ÷ 1,786 ≈ 14%. Roughly 14% of magnesium glycinate’s weight is magnesium. That is why a glycinate label needs a large compound number to reach a modest elemental number, and why bottles with the same compound weight but different forms (citrate, oxide, glycinate) can deliver very different amounts of magnesium.

Check serving size, not just the bottle

Many magnesium products list their amount per serving, and a serving is often more than one capsule. Count capsules per serving and servings per container before comparing prices or doses.

Know the upper limit for supplements

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists an upper limit of 350 mg per day of supplemental magnesium for adults. That limit covers magnesium from supplements, laxatives and antacids, not magnesium from food. Too much supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. Add up every product you take that contains magnesium, including multivitamins.

An example: GlyciNight™

GlyciNight™ Magnesium Glycinate lists 250 mg of magnesium from 1,786 mg of magnesium glycinate per two-capsule serving, with 60 capsules (30 servings) per bottle. The directions are to take two capsules once daily according to the label. Melatonin is not listed in the formula.

Before you choose

  • Look for the elemental amount next to “Magnesium”.
  • Confirm how many capsules make one serving.
  • Total your magnesium from all supplements against the 350 mg limit.
  • Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18, taking medication or managing a medical condition, including kidney conditions.
